Founded in 1978, The Birth Center opened its doors to the community as the first out-of-hospital, free-standing birthing facility in the Delaware Valley. The founders created The Birth Center as a non-profit, 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) charitable organization with the mission of providing safe, satisfying care for women and their families throughout their lives. Central to this mission is to create an intimate environment for birthing and a personalized model of care. The midwives at The Birth Center provide maternity and well-woman gynecology care for clients throughout the greater Philadelphia region. Now 7, 000 babies later and counting, The Birth Center will celebrate it s 30th in anniversary in 2008, still actively fulfilling the original founders mission and dream. As the first licensed birth center in Pennsylvania and the oldest continually operational birth center in the United States, The Birth Center has set the highest standard for model of care, cost containment and innovative programs. The Birth Center has been a teaching site for nurse-midwifery students as well as for undergraduate nursing students from local universities. The strong alliances made with Bryn Mawr Hospital Obstetricians and the Main Line Health System have furthered the organization s mission. Our midwives have privileges at the neighboring Bryn Mawr Hospital. This has allowed staff to provide everything from high touch/low tech care to high touch/high tech care, without ever losing the highly personalized attention characteristic of the midwifery care offered. Over the last three decades, The Birth Center has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community served, while holding fast to its original mission of providing the highest level of care. Because this model considers client satisfaction critical, The Birth Center provides a full thirty minutes or more for appointments, individualized attention to each woman s needs, and educational programs on birthing, parenting and well-woman care. The staff continues to reach out to underserved populations to include them in our family. No woman who desires The Birth Center's model of care has ever been denied care from The Birth Center because of a lack of health insurance or ability to pay for care.
