Formed by longtime friends and Southwest Virginia natives Erik Robinson, who serves as Executive Director, and Billy Wagner, a Tazewell native and pitcher with the Atlanta Braves, the Second Chance Learning Center (SCLC) is a non-profit foundation. The program was established to address the increased school dropout rate in Southwest Virginia by providing free counseling, tutoring and mentoring for middle and high school students with social and educational problems. Working with public school teachers, who identify teenagers and young adults with extra needs, SCLC provides individualized attention for students who are at-risk due to their grades and/or behavior. At Second Chance, these students have the ability to work one-on-one with teachers in an environment to help them prosper. Second Chance Learning Center also provides scholarships to Southwest Virginia students who wish to continue their education in college or trade school. In addition, Second Chance provides grants to assist teachers in their classroom. Through these efforts, SCLC works to allow students to realize their full potential and become positive influences in our community.
