I adopted 2 dogs there and am so grateful to have them. I have always had pleasant experiences and have taken all my dogs to the vaccine clinics over the years which I am also grateful for. In our search for new family additions we have visited many times and all the animals are good looking and seem well cared for. 2 super success stories of adoptions 6 and 4 years ago and vaccine/micro chip services since then. We added a third baby from a neighbors oops liter and the Aurora Animal Shelter chipped and vaccinated him. Thanks!

They don't care. For Christma...

They don't care.
For Christmas, I adopted a 5 year old stray cat with a heart murmer, missing teeth and half a tail from the Dumb Friends League. He has a lion-heart and loves my young child. But, he was a stray. I am working hard to teach the cat to stay inside, and teach my child not to let him out, he is microchipped and has tags.

two weeks ago, he went missing. I was frantic. I filed a pet finder report, searched the entire subdivision, made flyers, and started combing shelter posts on the internet.

I found a post at the Aurora Animal Shelter website for a FEMALE GRAY TABBY that kinda looked like him, but it was blurry and you couldn't see his tail. I called. They refused to identify my cat over the phone. I went there. They couldn't care less about me or my cat. They didn't bother to scan his microchip, or even check gender (he wears a pink collar- does that make him a female?). They wouldn't even give me a box to take him home in. The Aurora Animal Shelter is poorly run. I love cats, but I strongly recommend AGAINST supporting them in any way.

On the weekend of September 15...

On the weekend of September 15 I took my Pitbull mix Katie, over to my brothers to be dogsat for the weekend. Sunday I came back to pick her up only to find out that his girlfriend had intentionally let her out, Saturday morning. I was distraught and beside myself with panic. Eventually I calmed down and found a description of her on the website but no picture. It was Sunday when I found out so I went to the pound first thing when they opened at 11am Monday morning. By the goodness of god I found my dog..

Unfortunately I was horrified to see feces and blood all over in her cage. I was immediately alarmed because Katie is very well house trained and could hold it for a whole day and a half probably if she had to. But, I brushed it off and immediately went back to the front to try and take my dog home. I presented all the papers and proof that we lived in Westminister where indeed Pitbulls were legal. Unfortunately I was told I would not be able to take her home, and that I would have to go to court to pay a $700 fine plus the $50 fee plusss another $15 dollars a day. And court wasn't set untill two weeks away!!! I was beside myself and wanted to talk to someone to see if there was any way to get Katie out sooner.

They not only told me "no." , but also that these were my "consequences i deserved for having my dog in aurora." I thought that was innapropriate, considering noone deserves borderline animal cruelty. Not the owner and definitely not the pet!! Next I asked if my dog could go to the bathroom considering she was the only one with feces and such in her cage. The guy I was talking to brought the supervisor in (not the nicest lady), she then informed me that since my dogs breed was a Pitbull mix, "that it was not mandatory to let the dog out in order to go to the bathroom and that it was perfectly fine for her to go in her cage." Both people I talked to were flat out rude, didn't seem to care - meanwhile I am just about in tears the whole time.

I hung around for about 30 mins more and petted my dog from under the cage. I also talked to the staff who walked and fed the dogs, one lady told me she almost couldn't work there anymore somedays because it made her so sad to see the way the Pitbulls were treated. Not to mention they were told not to take the Pitbulls out at all.
Also, they do not allow Pitbull Rescue places to get the dog in the event that you cannot afford the fines your dog is euthanized. Overall it was just not a pleasant place. Those poor animals. Especially the Pittie's no animal deserves to be in such a cruel, cruel place.

Presumptuous governmental agency -- taking family dogs away from owners who have had the animals for 10+ years -- is NOT using common sense.

Wow. I wonder if anyone at this shelter is listening? All ONE STAR reviews!! Taxpayers spend money to protect these animals and you have idiots running the show. Everyone: TAKE YOU DOGS/CATS TO THE DENVER DUMB FRIENDS LEAGUE FOR ADOPTION. They're treated beautifully and 99% find their forever homes.

I have just spent 30 minutes on hold with these people while a loose small-breed dog is running loose in the street. Tax dollars for what? A lousy recording that tells me I have reached "The City of Aurora"? Doesn't seem to be such a place'cause nobody is home!

evil, corrupt, and unjust

The City of Aurora's animal control cares more about money than the people they claim to protect. From the judge to the officers, they would rather kill good people's pets than protect them.

Seriously

I called to have them pick up some random dog that wandered into my front yard. Dispatch asked me what kind of dog it was so I said it looks like An Alaskan husky (my best guess), he corrects me and goes in to tell me what breed it must be, like I care, come get the damn dog silly, lmao... Seriously!

on june 11 th 2012 my fiance woke me up too H. HERNANDEZ(animal care officer) taking my two akc boxers, after my neighbor called cause there fence blew down and my dogs were in back in thier yard playing with there dog....i patiently waited for mr hernandez to come out of my neighbors garage,he stated that hes taking my dogs due to them being vicious, prior to that my fiance asked him to be careful cause my female (pandora)was pregnant(due any day)he continued to slam her into the bumper and said 'I DONT CARE,GO GIVE ME YOUR FU...... ID TO my fiance,i was comin out and he proceded to talk very rudely and unproffesional to me .After i had a few words with him he said go in house and shut up,'FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS WHAT I SAID...Even the neighbor that called said he acted very poorly and unprofesional.after i told him iam getting camera ,i asked for his card and he handed me a ticket with like 6 charges,After walkin in to get camera he took off (quickly)..long story short the animal contol officer H. HERNANDEZ SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY,Yet the shelter itself was more than helpful.but id be careful on having H HERNANDEZ coming out to deal with your animal ,all my witnesses say he seemed to be in a very fowl mood and overduing his authority.maybe he should re evaluate his future as a a animal care officer.lets see what happens with my so called vicious dogs.thank you ...JASON ROBERT DODGE. PS ....NIETHER DOG HAD A SCRATCH AND THEY WERE STILL KEPT FOR TEN(10)DAYS TILL I GO TO COURT FOR THEM....ill keep you posted..
