My first experience at the Nat...

My first experience at the Natural Hair Center was a very positive one. I had just gone to a barber to have my very long ‘fro trimmed, and ended up nearly bald. I was so frustrated that I made an appointment at the NHC for a consultation and sew-in. When I arrived, I talked to a very courteous stylist who made me feel much better about my shorter hair. She actually told me that she’d rather give me a style that would show-off my short, natural hair than cover it up with a sew-in. I agreed to give it a try, and ended up getting coils. Even though I didn’t really think the style was “me,” the consultation was awesome, and I think I got my money’s worth ($60) from the visit. I twisted the coils out a few days later, and LOVED the curly-fro look that resulted. All in all, I was pleased with that visit.

I returned a few weeks later for kinky twists. My appointment was at 8:30 am, and I arrived at 8:20. I had been told that the hair weave would be provided by the salon; when I got there, the stylist who does the kinky twists informed me that they weren’t able to get the weave over the weekend, and I’d have to wait for someone else to bring it when they came in for the day. So I waited; thirty minutes later, someone (the salon’s “managers,” I think) called on the phone and told the stylist that they would be late. She then gave the phone to me, and a gentleman asked me if I would be okay with going to the beauty supply store across the street to buy the weave myself so that the stylist could start my service. They would reimburse me by deducting the cost of the hair from my bill. At this point, I was just ready to get started, so I agreed. Of course, I had to wait close to another half hour for the beauty supply to open. When it finally did, the stylist and I went across the street, and I bought the weave. On the way out, the stylist told me she was going to drop by CVS to buy snacks. Mind you, I’ve already been sitting in this place for an hour waiting for them to start my service. Nevertheless, she stopped to buy her snacks, wasting even more of my time. When she got back, we were finally able to get started.

The kinky twists took about five hours to complete. Once finished, the stylist asked me if I had been told how much they would cost. When she said that, I realized that when I made the appointment, I had not been given a price quote. Now, this is partly my fault; since the receptionist was so thorough when I made the first appointment, it didn’t occur to me that she would leave out information when I made the second appointment. BIG MISTAKE. Apparently, Taliah Waajid’s kinky twists cost a whopping $250. $250 for sitting around waiting for an hour after my appointment was supposed to start, having to walk across a busy street to buy my own weave, and generally receiving mediocre service. And the kinky twists themselves? They started coming out only two weeks after I had them done. I lost seven twists around the edges of my hair before I’d even had the style for a month.

The Natural Hair Center is a decent hair salon with mediocre service. I’ve been to several other salons just like it. The difference? Those other salons aren’t ridiculously over-priced. This place simply charges too much money for a less-than-stellar end-result. My twists were definitely not worth what I paid for them, especially considering all I had to go through to get them. I would recommend this salon to anyone who doesn’t mind wasting money, but as for me, I’m still on the lookout for a good natural hair salon where I can get my money’s worth in service and product.

P.S.

I’m STILL a big fan of Taliah Waajid’s products; I use the Kinky, Wavy, Natural line RELIGIOUSLY! :-)
