The Madison County Literacy Coalition is a local nonprofit organization that was formed in 1985 to address the problem of adult illiteracy in this community. At The Literacy Center in downtown Anderson, free tutoring in reading, writing, comprehension, and spelling is offered to adult learners. All tutors are volunteers. It is estimated that one out of five adults in America are "functionally illiterate" which means that they do not read well enough to function independently in everyday personal, social, and work situations. Youth literacy projects are all focused on making books available to children and teens with the goal of growing lifelong readers. Book give-aways, a Little Free Library, and bookcases in locations accessible to young people are provided by MCLC. The Book Nook is located in retail spaced donated by Mounds Mall and is staffed primarily by volunteers. All of the books have been donated or traded. The bookshop creates the money to make the Coalition's services possible. The Book Nook at Mounds Mall is operated by The Madison County Literacy Coalition. When you purchase gently used books, all proceeds are used to provide free literacy tutoring to adults in our community who struggle with the most basic reading skills. "...so that all can read." These simple words are the mission statement of The Madison County Literacy Coalition. The ability to read and write is the basis for all other education. Adult literacy programs such as The Madison County Literacy Coalition offer a second chance to adults who were unable to learn in traditional ways. Services are available to adults who struggle with reading, writing, comprehension, and spelling.
