In the late 1990s, James "Mike" Royer, Ph.D. was conducting research on listening and reading comprehension at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He became fascinated with the idea of a computer-based diagnostic tool that could discern the different types of reading problems he saw students grappling with and offer appropriate solutions. Dr. Royer turned to his tennis partner and software developer, Jeremy Wise, Ph.D., and together, they built Reading Success Lab. At the time, Dr. Wise was a computer software developer in the sports industry. He had the intricate programming knowledge Dr. Royer needed, and their collaboration led to the launch of Reading Success Lab in 2003.
